Direct API Connections: ORC, MWPHRF, and the Data That Drives Fair Racing
Accurate handicap data is the foundation of fair racing, but getting that data into your scoring system has always been painful. Download a PDF from ORC. Copy numbers into a spreadsheet. Email the PHRF committee for the latest ratings. Hope nothing changed since last week. Regatta RC eliminates that friction with direct API connections to the organizations that issue and maintain the ratings.
Our ORC integration pulls certificate data straight from the ORC database. When a boat's ORC certificate is issued or updated, Regatta RC can retrieve the current ratings, time allowances, and scoring options automatically. No manual downloads, no stale PDFs, no transcription errors. The race committee always has the latest official numbers. However, sailors are in control of their 'Sailing Vessel' (SV) configurations, i.e., which valid certifcate is being used for a particular race or series.
On the PHRF side, we've partnered with the Midwest Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (MWPHRF) to build a two-way data connection. Regatta RC pulls current MWPHRF ratings for registered boats, keeping handicap data in sync without manual entry. But the integration goes further than just consuming data — we're also providing an API back to MWPHRF that delivers anonymized performance data from scored races.
That return feed is a game-changer for handicap fairness. Today, PHRF committees adjust ratings based on limited regatta results that are submitted inconsistently and often months late. With Regatta RC feeding corrected-time performance data back in near-realtime, handicappers gain visibility into how boats are actually performing across a full season of racing — not just the two or three regattas that someone remembered to report. Over time, this means more accurate ratings, fewer outliers, and fairer racing for everyone.
We're building these integrations as open, documented APIs. ORC and MWPHRF are the first, but the architecture supports any rating authority that wants to connect. IRC, ORR, and regional PHRF bodies are all on the roadmap. The goal is simple: the right rating data, in the right system, at the right time — with zero manual effort from the race committee or the sailor.
